Do You Have Poet Energy?

Personality Traits and Types

Published:

Poet energy has very little to do with whether you have ever written a poem. Most people with it never have. It is a particular way of paying attention, where ordinary things keep arriving with more weight than they strictly need, and where a phrase somebody said in passing lodges in your head for eleven years. You can have it and work in logistics. You can lack it entirely and have an English degree. The writing is optional and the noticing is not.

The Noticing Is The Whole Thing

Ask somebody with poet energy what they saw today and you get something specific and strange. A man reading a menu very slowly. The way a room sounded after everybody left. Light on a wall for about four minutes. They are not curating this for effect, that is honestly what registered. Meanwhile somebody without it had a perfectly good day and remembers the meeting and lunch. Neither is better at being alive, but one of them is carrying around a great deal more raw material than the other.

Signs You Might Have It

A few tells that come up repeatedly. You remember weather from specific days years ago. Certain words feel physically satisfying to say and you have no idea why. You have been accused of being dramatic when you were being precise. You have a note on your phone full of fragments that make no sense to anybody else. You get unreasonably affected by things that are not sad, such as an empty station, or somebody laughing two streets away. If three of those landed, the answer to the title is probably yes.

Poet Energy Is Not The Same As Being Sensitive

Worth separating, since they get conflated constantly. Sensitivity is about how much things affect you. Poet energy is about compression, the instinct to find the smallest possible way to say something enormous. Plenty of people with it are dry, funny and quite hard to upset, and their poet energy shows up in how economically they can destroy an argument with one sentence. It is a relationship with language and attention, not a fragility.

The Cost Of Carrying It

Honest section. It makes ordinary conversation harder, because the gap between what you noticed and what is sayable at a work lunch is enormous, and most people with poet energy have learned to keep a lot of it back. It also makes a certain kind of loneliness available that other people do not experience, the loneliness of having seen something and having nobody to hand it to. The fix is not therapy, it is finding one or two people who receive it without needing it explained, which usually takes decades and is worth every year of the search.

What To Do With It If You Have It

Something, ideally. Not necessarily poems. The energy has to go somewhere or it turns into a low hum of frustration, and people who carry it without any outlet tend to feel vaguely unused. Photographs work. Letters work. Song lyrics, notes to yourself, a document nobody will ever read. Even just saying the thing out loud to one person counts. The output does not need an audience or any quality whatsoever, it needs to exist, because unexpressed noticing has a way of turning into melancholy that nobody can trace back to its source.

It Tends To Arrive Early And Stay

Most people with it can trace it back to childhood, usually to being the one who found something moving that nobody else in the room registered. It rarely goes away, though it does go quiet during very busy or very practical stretches of life, which is why people sometimes think they have lost it. They have not. It resurfaces the moment there is space, often abruptly, usually somewhere inconvenient like a long drive or a hospital waiting room. If you have felt it come back recently after years of nothing, that is normal and it usually means something in your life has loosened.

Answer honestly rather than romantically, and find out how much poet energy you are carrying.
