What Would Your Dream Home Look Like?

Personality Traits and Types

Published:

Ask anybody to describe their dream home and you get a photograph. Ask them to describe a Tuesday in it and you get something far more honest. Where are you standing at seven in the morning. What can you see out of the window. How far is the nearest person. Who else is in the building. The photograph version is about aesthetics and the Tuesday version is about how you want to live, and the two frequently disagree with each other in ways worth noticing before anybody signs anything.

Light, Space, Or People Nearby?

Almost every dream home preference comes down to which of three things you will not compromise on. Some people need light above all and will accept a small, awkward, expensive place if the light is right. Some need space and will take a long commute, bad insulation and a leaking roof to get it. And some need people nearby, meaning a street, neighbours, a shop at the end of the road, and they will happily live in four rooms to have it. Everybody says they want all three. Almost nobody gets all three, and knowing which one you would fight for is worth more than any mood board.

Six Homes, Six Daily Lives

The converted barn gives enormous volume, terrible heating bills and a genuine sense of having made something out of a ruin. The glass box gives light and view and almost no privacy, and it is the most demanding to keep looking right. The layered Victorian terrace gives character, awkward rooms and a permanent restoration project. The beach house gives weather, salt damage and the best mornings of anybody's life. The city apartment gives convenience, noise and an enormous amount of time back. And the cabin gives silence, firewood and a real distance from everything.

The Maintenance Nobody Includes In The Fantasy

Every dream home is also a job, and the job varies hugely. Glass needs cleaning constantly and shows everything. Old houses need somebody with either skills or a budget, permanently. Beach houses corrode. Barns cost a fortune to heat. Apartments need almost nothing from you, which is their most underrated feature. Being honest about how much of your life you want to spend maintaining a building is the difference between a home that restores you and one that quietly eats your weekends for a decade.

What Would You Put In The Best Room?

Revealing question and people answer it fast. Given the room with the best light and the best view, some people put the kitchen there because that is where life happens. Some put the bed there, for the mornings. Some put a desk there, because that is where their good hours go. Some put nothing in it at all, keeping it as a room to sit in, which is the rarest and possibly the wisest answer. What you would install in the best space tells you what you genuinely value, rather than what you would list if asked directly.

Dream Homes Change With What You Are Escaping

Most dream homes are a correction to something. People in noisy flats dream of cabins. People who spent a childhood somewhere isolated often dream of a city street with everything on it. If your fantasy has shifted in the last five years, the thing that changed is usually your circumstances rather than your taste. The fantasy is doing its job, which is showing you what your current life is short of, and that is useful information even for people with no intention of moving anywhere.

Answer for the Tuesday rather than the photograph, and see which home you would really want.
