What Is Your Compliment Style?

Love and Relationships

Think of the best compliment you've ever received. Not a generic "you look nice," but the one you still remember years later. Maybe a teacher told you that your essay made them see a book differently. Maybe a friend noticed you'd been working out for months before anyone else said a word. Maybe a stranger stopped you on the street to say your coat was the best thing they'd seen all week. Chances are, that compliment stuck because of how it was given, not only what was said.

Everyone has a natural way of praising people. Some of us gush. Some of us write things down. Some of us can't say anything kind without wrapping it in a joke first. Your compliment style is a small but surprisingly revealing piece of your personality, because it shows how you pay attention to the people around you and how comfortable you are saying nice things out loud.

Loud, Quiet or Somewhere in Between

At one end of the scale are the Hype Friends. They scream, they cheer, they use all caps in the group chat, and they turn your small win into a full celebration. Right next to them sit the Public Shout-Out types, who believe good news deserves an audience and will happily give a toast, post a photo or praise you in the team chat so everyone can see.

On the quieter side, the Quiet Note Writers rarely gush in person but leave a handwritten card on your desk or send a long message late at night that you'll screenshot and keep forever. The Detail Noticers spot exactly what's new or different, like the fresh haircut, the clever slide in your presentation or the way your shoes match your bag. The Effort Appreciators look past the result and praise the early mornings, the practice and the patience it took to get there. And then there are the Playful Teasers, whose "okay, show-off" is their way of saying "I'm so proud of you."

None of these styles is better than the others. The loud ones lift the room. The quiet ones give people something to keep. The detail people make others feel seen, and the teasers keep things light enough that a compliment doesn't feel awkward.

Giving vs. Receiving

Here's the funny part. The way we like to give compliments isn't always the way we like to receive them. A Hype Friend might feel a little uncomfortable when someone makes a big public fuss over them. A Playful Teaser might quietly treasure a sincere card that doesn't contain a single joke. Knowing your own style can help you notice when someone in your life speaks a different compliment language than you do.

That matters, because a lot of kind words get missed. Your quieter friend might never cheer loudly, but they remember every early training run you did before your first race. Your teasing coworker might never say "great work" directly, but their grin after your presentation said it. Once you know what to look for, you'll realize you've been complimented more often than you thought.

Try This Week

Pick one person and give them a compliment in a style that isn't your usual one. If you're a hype person, try writing a short, specific note. If you usually keep things private, try praising someone in front of others, as long as they'd enjoy it. If you tend to tease, say the nice part plainly, without the joke. It's a small experiment, and it can make someone's whole week.

Then take the quiz. The questions cover haircuts, presentations, birthday dinners, stranger compliments and what you'd say to a friend who just crossed a marathon finish line. Pick the answer you'd most likely do in real life, and find out which compliment style is yours.
