What Is My Communication Style?

Personality Traits and Types

Published:

Ever sent a text you thought was perfectly normal, only to get back "…are you mad at me?" Or listened to a friend tell a story for six minutes when you just wanted to know whether they got the job? That's communication style at work. We all have one, and when two different styles bump into each other, things can get a little weird.

Same Words, Totally Different Meanings

Here's a simple example. Two people get asked "Do you like my new haircut?" when the haircut is, let's say, not great. The first person says, kindly but clearly, "Honestly, I liked it longer." The second says, "Oh, the color looks so good on you!" and changes the subject. A third tells a hilarious story about their own disastrous bangs in 2014. A fourth explains, with surprising detail, which length would suit their face shape better.

Every one of those people is trying to be a good friend. They're just using completely different tools. The direct person values honesty. The tactful one values keeping the peace. The storyteller connects through humor. The precise one wants to be useful. None of them is wrong, but you can imagine how each response might land differently depending on who's asking.

Where Your Style Shows Up Most

Texting is a big giveaway. Some people send one-word replies and consider the conversation finished. Others reread every message three times before hitting send. Some can't type a sentence without two exclamation marks, and some barely text at all and would rather wait to talk in person. Voice notes are an even bigger clue. Are you a twelve-second, straight-to-the-point sender, or do your voice notes run four minutes and include sound effects?

Conflict shows your style too. When a coworker takes credit for your idea, do you say something right there in the meeting? Pull them aside later? Forward the email trail with timestamps? Or vent about it to your friends over dinner in full dramatic detail? How you handle that one moment says a lot about how you handle tension in general.

And then there's the stuff people get wrong about you. Quiet people get called shy when they're just thinking. Precise people get called cold. Diplomatic people get accused of having no opinion. Cheerful people get asked if they're "always like this." If one of those made you nod, you've probably already got a hint about your result.

The Six Styles

This quiz matches you with one of six communication styles. The Straight Shooter is direct and honest. The Diplomat is tactful and keeps the peace. The Storyteller is expressive and turns everything into an experience. The Analyst is precise and fact-driven. The Encourager is warm, supportive and full of hype. And the Quiet Observer says less, listens more, and makes every word count.

Most people have a bit of two or three of these, but one usually takes the lead, especially when you're stressed or tired. That's the one this quiz is trying to find.

A Quick Note Before You Start

This is a fun self-reflection quiz, not a professional assessment, so there are no wrong answers. Think about how you really talk to friends, family and coworkers on a normal day, not how you'd like to come across in a job interview. The ten questions cover texting habits, arguments, party behavior, feedback and a few awkward moments everyone has been through at least once.
