What Kind of Forest Creature Are You?

The big animals get all the attention, which is a shame, because the woodland is mostly run by things under two kilos. Hedgehogs, squirrels, hares, dormice, the badger in its enormous underground city, the pine marten going where nothing else can follow. These are the creatures with the most personality per gram, and they map onto human temperaments far more precisely than any apex predator ever manages. Nobody is really a bear. Plenty of people are unmistakably a badger.

Small, And Not Remotely Fragile

There is a lazy assumption that small animals are timid ones. Anybody who has met a hedgehog knows better. These are creatures with extremely specific strategies, hoarding, digging, freezing, running, going out at hours when nothing else is about. Each strategy is a full theory about how to survive a forest, and each one carries a different personality with it. The hoarder and the runner are not the same person. The one who goes underground and the one who climbs are solving the same problem from opposite directions.

The Sociable Ones And The Solitary Ones

Hares are almost entirely solitary and cover enormous ground alone. Hedgehogs are solitary but not remote, wandering through everybody's garden nightly. Dormice are tiny and social in a very small circle. Pine martens want nobody near them. And squirrels are neither, just relentlessly busy and largely indifferent to who is watching. Nocturnal Is Not A Personality Flaw

The human version of this gets treated as antisocial, when in most cases the person has simply worked out that the world is easier at ten at night than at ten in the morning. A last thought. Every one of these leaves an unmistakable trace. Squirrels leave dug holes and stripped cones. Badgers leave paths that have been there for decades. Hedgehogs leave nothing but they have visited everybody. Hares leave flattened grass and enormous distance. The human question underneath is what trace you leave on a place, whether you rearrange it, wear a permanent path into it, pass through touching nothing, or cover so much ground that nowhere is really yours.

Two Creatures In One Household

Worth thinking about once you have your result, because these combinations explain a lot of domestic friction. A badger and a hare living together is a permanent low-level negotiation about how much time is spent at home. A hedgehog and a squirrel works well, since one is out all night and the other is busy all day and they barely overlap. Two pine martens in one flat is a strange and mostly silent arrangement that suits both of them perfectly and worries everybody else. None of it needs fixing, it only needs naming, and most arguments about nothing turn out to be about this.
