You spot someone cute at a party. What's your first move?
What Is My Flirting Style?
Some people flirt like they're doing stand-up comedy. Some flirt by asking about your childhood dog and remembering its name three weeks later. And some flirt so quietly that the person they like has no idea until a mutual friend spells it out for them over brunch. If you've ever been told "wait, you were flirting?", this quiz is very much for you.
What 5,000 People Told One Researcher
In 2010, communication researcher Jeffrey Hall at the University of Kansas surveyed more than 5,000 people about how they flirt and landed on five main styles. Traditional flirts like clear roles, often with one person expected to make the first move. Physical flirts communicate with body language, leaning in and holding eye contact. Sincere flirts build an emotional connection through real conversation. Playful flirts treat the whole thing as a fun game and don't always mean much by it. Polite flirts are careful, respectful and slow to make a move.
One of the more interesting findings was that sincere flirting tended to go along with deeper connections, while playful flirts were more likely to enjoy flirting for its own sake. Neither is better. They just get you different things. If you want a fun night out, playful works great. If you want someone to text you the next morning, sincere usually has the edge.
The Style Nobody Puts on Their Dating Profile
Hall's five styles cover a lot, but there's one group that doesn't fit, and you probably know someone in it. The Accidental Flirt has no strategy at all. They compliment someone's shoes, knock over a drink, laugh too loudly and walk away convinced nothing happened. Meanwhile the other person is texting their friends asking what that was about. Accidental flirts often get read as either very smooth or completely uninterested, and they're usually neither.
So this quiz has six results: the Playful Teaser, the Sincere Connector, the Physical Flirt, the Traditional Romantic, the Polite Slow-Burn and the Accidental Flirt. Most people have a main style plus a backup that shows up after a glass of wine or a really good song.
When Two Styles Collide
Knowing your style is handy mostly because it explains the misfires. A Playful Teaser who roasts a Polite Slow-Burn might come across as mean when they meant it as affection. A Physical Flirt who leans in early can make a Traditional Romantic feel rushed. A Sincere Connector asking deep questions on a first date might overwhelm someone who just wanted mini golf and a laugh. And two Accidental Flirts can circle each other for a year without either one noticing a thing.
None of this means you need to change who you are. It just helps to read the room a little. If your banter isn't landing, try one honest question. If your quiet interest has gone unnoticed for months, a plain "I'd like to take you to dinner" works better than another polite check-in text. If you're the one doing all the leaning in, give the other person a chance to lean back.
The questions ahead ask what you'd do at a party, how you text someone you like, what your ideal first date looks like and what your friends say about your moves. Answer the way you'd really behave, not the way your most confident friend would. There are no wrong styles here, only ones that work better with certain people.
