Are You Soft Glam or Full Glam?

Every makeup tutorial comment section eventually turns into the same argument. One camp says the look is gorgeous but way too much for real life. The other says real life is boring and that is exactly why they wear lashes to the pharmacy. Both camps are right about themselves, and the line between soft glam and full glam turns out to be less about products and more about how much attention you want your face to ask for.

The Case for Soft Glam

Soft glam is makeup that looks like very good skin and a well-rested week. Neutral shadow blended until there are no edges, a bit of definition at the lash line, a lip a shade or two deeper than your own. Soft glam people tend to like being seen as themselves, just a polished version. They're the friend who looks great at brunch without anyone being able to say exactly what they did. At the far end of soft are the barely-there people, who wear tinted sunscreen, a brow gel and maybe some balm, and feel overdone with anything more. They'll happily spend money on skincare, but a full palette makes them nervous.

The Case for Full Glam

Full glam is the whole production. Foundation, concealer, contour, powder, lashes, a carved crease, a lip lined past its natural edge, highlighter catching every light in the room. Full glam people usually see makeup as part of their confidence and creativity, and many of them find the routine relaxing, a forty-minute ritual with a podcast that gets them in the mood for the day. Some only do it for events, birthdays, weddings, a dinner they've been looking forward to all month. Others do it every morning because it makes them feel like themselves, and they're tired of being asked what the occasion is. Ask a full glam person about their favorite lash glue and you'll get a detailed answer, a backup option and a warning about the one brand that ruined a wedding photo.

The Case for a Little of Both

Plenty of people sit between the two. They do a soft, wearable base and then add one full-glam moment, a glitter lid, a glossy cherry lip, a sharp graphic liner. These people like being a little surprising. They want you to notice one detail rather than the whole face, and they love it when someone asks, halfway through a conversation, where they got that shimmer.

The Case for Changing Your Mind

And then there are the people who flip completely depending on the week. Soft on Monday because they're tired, full glam on Friday because a new palette arrived and they've been thinking about it all day. Their makeup bag is a strange mix of tinted balms and dramatic lashes, and they use all of it. If that's you, you aren't indecisive. You're using makeup the way other people use music, to match a mood or change one.

None of these is a ranking. Soft isn't lazy and full isn't fake. A soft glam person can be every bit as skilled as a full glam person, they've just pointed that skill at making the effort invisible. A full glam person can be every bit as comfortable in their own skin, they just enjoy decorating it. The only wrong answer is wearing the version that makes you feel like you're in a costume, whether that costume is too much or too little for who you are.

The questions below ask how long you'll spend in front of the mirror, what you'd wear to a casual coffee date and how you feel about false lashes. Answer with what you'd do on a real morning, and you'll find out exactly where you sit on the soft to full scale.
