Are You the Plot Twist or the Main Story?

Every friend group is secretly a TV show. There's someone everyone builds plans around, someone who announces on a random Wednesday that they've quit their job and are moving to Lisbon, and someone who has been quietly in love with the same person for three years while everyone pretends not to notice. You've probably already guessed who plays which part in your circle. The harder question is which part you play.

Act One: The Setup

The main story is the person the plot depends on. They keep the same job long enough to get good at it, remember to book the table and stay friends with people from primary school. Without them, the group chat would fall apart within a week. Being the main story isn't boring, even if they sometimes worry it is. Theirs is the steady line that lets everyone else's chaos make sense, and people go to them when they need something solid to lean on.

Act Two: The Twist Arrives

The plot twist is the opposite energy. They cut their hair off at midnight, adopt a parrot without telling anyone and switch careers every few years with total confidence. You never quite know what they'll say next, which makes them exhausting to plan around and impossible to forget. Plot twists often don't see themselves as unpredictable at all. From the inside, every big change feels obvious and slightly overdue.

Act Three: The People Between the Lines

Most people aren't purely one or the other, which is where the other roles come in. The slow burn changes so gradually that nobody notices until it's done: one year they're painfully shy, five years later they're giving the best man speech and nailing it. The living cliffhanger leaves everything on a hook, whether it's a story they promise to finish later, a relationship status nobody can confirm or a text that ends with "anyway, more on that soon." The comic relief keeps the whole show watchable by turning a disastrous date into a twenty-minute bit that has the table crying with laughter. And the unreliable narrator tells the story of their own life in a way that keeps shifting. The ex was a villain last month and a misunderstood soul this month, and they mean both versions completely.

Act Four: Why the Role Sticks

People settle into these parts early. If you were the dependable one at fourteen, friends still call you first when their car breaks down. If you were the wild card, nobody blinks when you move abroad. Roles feel comfortable because everyone knows their lines, but they can also box you in. A main story might want a twist and feel like they're not allowed one. A plot twist might crave a quieter life and worry it will look like giving up.

Act Five: Rewriting Your Part

The good news is that nobody holds the script except you. A main story can book a solo trip without warning anyone. A cliffhanger can finish a story for once. Small changes to your role often surprise your friends more than big ones, and those surprises end up as some of the best scenes in any group's history.

The people around you shape your role as much as you do, too. Put a steady main story in a group of three plot twists and they'll look even steadier. Put them with a crowd of homebodies and suddenly they're the adventurous one. Your part is partly about you and partly about the cast you've gathered.

The quiz below asks how you handle big news, what your friends say about you when you're not there, and what you'd do with a free year. Cast yourself honestly, and find out whether you're the plot twist, the main story or one of the characters in between.
