Am I Dating A Red Flag?

Love and Relationships

Published:

Your friend asks how things are going with the new person, and you hear yourself say "good, mostly," with a little pause before the "mostly." That pause is worth listening to. Maybe it's nothing. Maybe they just chew loudly and refuse to watch any movie made before 2005. Or maybe there's something that keeps nagging at you, like the way they went quiet for three days after you mentioned a work dinner.

Not Every Flag Is Red

The internet has turned flags into a whole color chart, and it's kind of useful. A green flag is a sign someone is safe and good for you: they're consistent, kind and happy for you when things go well. A beige flag is a harmless quirk, like someone who names their houseplants or only replies in voice notes. Then there's the in-between stuff, the habits that aren't dangerous but could wear you down, like always running late or getting defensive before apologizing. At the far end are the real red flags, the patterns that make you feel smaller, more anxious or less free over time.

Most people aren't purely one color. A partner can be wonderfully supportive and still be rubbish at texting back. What matters is the overall pattern, and whether the person cares when something they do hurts you.

The Quiet Ones Are Easy to Miss

Big dramatic red flags are easy to spot in movies. In real life they tend to arrive quietly. Someone who sulks every time you see your friends, then calls it "missing you." A partner who's incredibly intense in the first month, with daily gifts and talk of moving in, and then turns cold the moment you set a boundary. Somebody whose every ex was "crazy," with none of it being their fault. A habit of turning your good news into a story about themselves.

Another common one is that you start apologizing more than usual, even when you're not sure what you did. If you catch yourself rehearsing how to bring something up, or editing what you tell your friends so they won't worry, that's worth paying attention to.

Trusting Your Gut Without Spiraling

On the flip side, nobody is perfect, and treating every small quirk as a dealbreaker will leave you single and exhausted. Someone who forgets your coffee order isn't a villain. Someone who gets grumpy when they're hungry isn't controlling. The question is less "do they ever do anything annoying?" and more "do I feel more like myself or less like myself with them?"

A helpful test is to imagine your best friend describing this exact relationship to you over drinks. Would you be happy for them, mildly amused or a little worried? We're often kinder and clearer about other people's situations than about our own, mostly because we're not the ones hoping it works out.

It also helps to look at how things change over time rather than at one bad evening. Everyone has an off night. A pattern that keeps repeating after you've talked about it is a different story.

About Your Result

This is a fun self-reflection quiz, not relationship counseling, and ten questions can't see the whole picture. Your result could be anything from the Solid Green Flag to the Bright Red Flag, with the Beige Flag, the Work-in-Progress, the Hot-and-Cold Flag and the Spotlight Stealer in between. If anything about your relationship leaves you feeling scared or controlled, please talk to someone you trust or contact a local support line. You deserve to feel safe. For everyone else, answer honestly about the person you're with, not the person you hope they'll become.
