What Would Your Signature Perfume Be?

Personality Traits and Types

Published:

Think about the last time someone told you that you smelled nice. Not the polite, passing version, the specific one, where a friend leaned in during a hug and asked what you were wearing, or a coworker mentioned they could tell you had been in the office before they saw you. That moment is the start of a signature scent, and the perfume that earns it usually has less to do with the bottle and more to do with the person spraying it.

A Signature Scent Starts as a Habit

Most people who have a signature perfume did not choose it at a department store counter. They found it by accident, a sample tucked into an online order, a bottle borrowed from a sister and never returned, a candle they liked so much they went looking for the perfume version. Then they kept wearing it. The repetition is what makes it signature. After a year or two the scent stops being something you put on and starts being something people associate with you, on your coat, in your car, on the pillow in the guest room after you've stayed over.

That is also why a signature scent should match your temperament rather than your aspirations. Buying a moody, smoky perfume because the bottle looks good on a shelf rarely works if your mornings are full of sunlight and coffee and you hum while you make the bed. You end up wearing it twice, feeling like you're in costume, and leaving it to gather dust next to the bathroom sink. The perfume that sticks is the one that smells like the life you already lead.

Six Scents and the People Who Wear Them

Clean musk people tend to be the organized friend. Their sheets are always freshly washed, their inbox is under control, and they like smelling like they just stepped out of a warm shower. It is comfort, but tidy comfort.

Rose and oud people are a little dramatic, in a good way. They like evening plans, low lighting and a perfume that announces itself a few seconds after they walk in. There is usually a bit of mystery to them, and they enjoy keeping it.

Citrus people are morning people, or at least they act like it. Grapefruit, bergamot, a splash of neroli. They are quick, upbeat and the first to suggest a walk after lunch. They want a scent that feels like opening a window on the first warm day of the year.

Vanilla and amber people are the warm ones. They bake when they are stressed, they own more blankets than any household needs, and their homes smell like somewhere you would want to stay a little longer. Their perfume works like a hug you can spray.

Green fig people are quietly independent. They garden, or want to, and they like scents that smell like crushed leaves and wet soil more than anything sugary. They don't need attention. They just like smelling like a place they would rather be.

Leather and tobacco people are the bold ones with good stories. They shop vintage, they wear a grandfather's watch, and they like a scent with a bit of smoke in it. It isn't for everyone, which is exactly why they wear it. Strangers sometimes stop them on the street to ask what it is, and they usually enjoy keeping the answer to themselves.

The questions below cover your mornings, your favorite room in the house and the kind of compliment you'd want to overhear. Answer them like nobody is going to check your perfume shelf afterward, and the scent that comes back should feel like something you could wear for the next ten years.
