What Type of Glam Are You?

Personality Traits and Types

Published:

Put six friends in front of the same mirror an hour before a wedding and you'll get six completely different ideas of what glam means. One reaches for a red lipstick and a round brush. One starts building contour like she's sculpting clay. One dabs highlighter on her cheekbones, sprays a mist and calls it done. All six are getting glam. They are just speaking different dialects of it.

So Which Dialect Do You Speak?

Hollywood glamour is the classic. Soft waves, a crisp winged liner, a red lip and a sense that you could step onto a vintage film set without changing a thing. People drawn to it value elegance and tend to dress up for occasions other people treat as casual, like a Tuesday dinner or a matinee. Soft glam is pink, fluffy and rosy, brushed-up brows, a blurred lip, a cheek flush that looks like you just came in from the cold. It suits sweet, warm people who like to look pretty rather than intimidating. The baddie full beat is the most work and the most fun for the people who love it. Sculpted cheekbones, overlined lips, big lashes, a highlight you can see from across a parking lot. It belongs to confident people who enjoy the process of transforming as much as the result.

Editorial glam is for the artists. Graphic liner in an unexpected color, floating creases, a single gem placed slightly off center on purpose. These people see a face as a blank canvas and get bored doing the same thing twice. Dewy glass glam is all about skin. Layers of hydrating serum, a cushion foundation, a glossy tint dabbed on lips and cheeks. Its people are patient, detail-oriented and a little obsessed with ingredient lists. Grunge glam is smudgy and imperfect on purpose, kohl dragged through the waterline, shadow that looks slept in, a dark lip blotted on the back of a hand. It suits people who like a bit of grit and don't trust anything too polished.

Does Your Everyday Look Count?

It counts more than you'd think. Most people's glam is an amplified version of their daily habits. If you wear tinted moisturizer and a lip oil to work, your glam probably leans dewy. If you never leave the house without liner, your glam probably leans Hollywood or grunge, depending on how neatly you apply it and how much you mind when it smudges by lunch. If your everyday face changes with your outfit, you might be an editorial type who simply hasn't had enough reasons to go big. And if your everyday routine already includes contour, nobody is surprised that your glam does too.

Your shopping habits give you away as well. Soft glam people own five nearly identical pink blushes and could explain the difference between each one. Full beat people know exactly which setting powder survives a twelve-hour event. Grunge people buy one black pencil at a time and use it down to a stub.

The other clue is how you feel when someone else does your makeup. A person who sits in a makeup artist's chair and comes out looking like a different person either loves it or quietly wipes half of it off in the car. That reaction tells you which glam is yours more clearly than any product list. The right glam makes you look like yourself at full volume, rather than like a stranger who borrowed your face for the evening.

The questions below ask about your getting-ready playlist, the kind of party you'd dress up for and the product you'd fight for in a sale. Go with your first answer, and your glam type should feel like an old friend rather than a surprise.
