What Type of Energy Do You Attract?

Personality Traits and Types

Published:

There's a certain kind of person who keeps showing up in your life. Different names, different jobs, sometimes different cities, but somehow the same energy. Maybe every new friend turns out to be going through a breakup. Maybe every coworker you click with ends up dragging you to a climbing gym or a pottery class. After the third or fourth time, it stops looking like coincidence and starts looking like a pattern you're part of.

Start With Your Last Five Conversations

You don't need to believe in anything mystical for this to make sense. People are drawn to whatever you signal without meaning to. If you listen well, the people who need listening find you. If you say yes to plans easily, the people who make plans find you. Scroll back through the last five real conversations you had, the ones that went past small talk, and look at what the other person wanted from you. Comfort? A partner in crime? Feedback on a project? A witness to a plan? That's the energy you're broadcasting, whether you picked it or not. Notice who reaches out first, too. The people who start conversations with you have decided what you're good for, and they usually decided it based on how you responded the last few times.

Who Keeps Finding You, and Why

Healing Energy draws people at their low points. Friends call you from parked cars, and acquaintances tell you about their therapy breakthroughs at a barbecue. You're calm in a way that makes people put down what they've been carrying. Adventurous Energy pulls in people with a half-formed idea and a free weekend. Someone always wants you for a road trip, a new restaurant on the other side of town, or a 5am hike that sounded better the night before.

Loyal Energy brings the long-haul people. Your friendships tend to last a decade or more, and the people you attract are the ones who help you move apartments twice and still remember your mom's name. Creative Energy draws makers. Musicians, people with a novel in a drawer, the friend who just started pouring candles in her kitchen. They want your reaction to their work because they can tell you'll take it seriously.

Chaotic Energy, and this is meant fondly, pulls in plot twists. The friend who got married in Vegas, the coworker with three side businesses, the neighbor who once kept a pet duck. Life around you is never short on stories. Ambitious Energy draws people who are building something and want company. Your group chat is full of job offers, launch dates, and people asking you to look over a pitch deck at 11pm.

When You'd Like a Different Crowd

None of these is a bad thing to attract, since people only keep coming back to what they get from you. Still, sometimes the energy you attract stops serving you. A healer can end up surrounded by people who only call when they're in crisis and vanish when things are good. Someone with chaotic energy might start wanting a few calm friends who don't need bail money, metaphorically or otherwise. The good news is that the signal can be adjusted. People who want different company usually change one small habit, like saying no to the fourth emergency call in a week, or showing up to a book club instead of another late bar. Change what you reward with your time, and the crowd slowly shifts with it.

The questions below ask who texts you first, what people come to you for, and what kind of plans keep landing on your calendar. Answer based on the last few months of your life, and see what kind of energy keeps walking through your door.
