What Should Your Signature Makeup Look Be?

Personality Traits and Types

Published:

You probably know at least one person with a signature look. The coworker who has worn the same winged liner every day for eleven years. The aunt whose red lipstick prints are on every coffee cup in the family photos. The friend whose freckled, flushed cheeks look the same in January as they do in August. You recognize these people by their faces before you remember their names.

A signature makeup look is the opposite of chasing every trend. It is one face you can do in the dark, that works for a job interview and a second date, and that people start to associate with you over time. The good news is that you probably have the beginnings of one already.

One Feature Usually Does the Heavy Lifting

Signature looks almost always center on a single feature. For the red lip person, it's the mouth, and everything else is kept quiet so the color can do its job. For the winged liner person, it's the eyes, a sharp flick or a smoky smudge that makes their whole face look awake. Bronze people center on cheekbones and the warm glow of a sunny holiday. Freckle and flush people center on a fresh, slightly sun-touched complexion that looks like they just came in from a bike ride. Monochrome people tie everything together with one shade, the same mauve on lids, cheeks and lips, which looks effortless and deliberately calm. Cool shimmer people center on the light itself, icy lilac or silver on the inner corners and a glow that looks almost lunar.

It Has to Survive a Rushed Morning

The test of a signature look is whether you can do it in ten minutes with a bad mirror and a train to catch. If your ideal face needs three brushes and full concentration, it may be a lovely special-occasion look, but it won't become your signature because you'll skip it on the busy days. The best signature looks are built from two or three products you know so well your hand moves on autopilot. A red lip person can apply their shade without a mirror, in a taxi, mid-conversation. A monochrome person uses the same cream stick everywhere and blends with their fingertips. A bronze person can sweep a big brush along the cheekbones and temples in about four seconds flat. If you notice that your favorite look keeps getting abandoned by Wednesday, that's useful information too. It usually means the look belongs to a version of you with more free time, and your real signature is hiding in whatever you do on Thursday when you're running late.

Your Personality Picks the Feature

Here is the part people tend to underestimate. The feature you choose to emphasize lines up with how you want to be read. Red lip people want to be heard. They're usually confident speakers and comfortable with attention, and they don't mind being the first to raise a hand. Winged liner people like sharpness, in their opinions and their style. Bronze people want to seem relaxed and warm, the friend everybody wants on holiday with them. Freckled flush people value approachability and a little playfulness, and strangers ask them for directions constantly. Monochrome people prize calm and cohesion, often in their homes and wardrobes too, where everything seems to belong to the same soft color family. Cool shimmer people tend to be dreamy and a little otherworldly, the type who notices the moon before anyone else does and stops walking to look at it.

The questions below ask about your mornings, the feature you get complimented on most and the kind of first impression you want to leave. Answer as yourself on a regular Tuesday rather than on your best day, and your signature look should be something you can start wearing tomorrow.
